There’s only but one news that interest me most during election period, the release of survey by SWS, Pulse Asia and other organizations.

Today, Inquirer.net published the latest result of SWS survey which showed presidential candidate Manny Villar improving his ratings by 6%. Villar’s rating is now at 33%, narrowing Noynoy’s lead down to 11%.

It’s a good news for Villar’s camp and supporters as this proves that Noynoy’s wide lead is not invincible.

We might soon see a very close fight between the two leading presidential candidates as election day comes close.

Here’s an excerpt of the news from Inquirer.net

The lead of Liberal Party standard-bearer Benigno Aquino III over his nearest rival, Sen. Manny Villar, of the Nacionalista Party has been narrowed to 11 percent, according to a recent Social Weather Stations survey commissioned by a Villar ally.

Aquino was the choice of 44 percent of 2,100 respondents across the country in the SWS special yearend survey conducted from Dec. 27 to 28, 2009.

Villar obtained 33 percent, narrowing the gap with Aquino to 11 percent, and improving his ratings from the 27 percent he got in the earlier Dec. 5-10 SWS survey.

The survey was privately commissioned by House Minority Leader San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, a Villar ally, and was released to Senate reporters by Villar’s office.

Senator Panfilo Lacson said ‘the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo might only be “testing the waters” to see if she could impose martial law in other parts of the country, especially in areas where violence could occur in the 2010 elections.’

Kung mayroon ka nga namang presidente sa kasalukuyan na animo’y ganid at kapit-tuko sa kapangyarihan ay hindi maiiwasang maibulalas ang tulad ng naturan ni Senador Panfilo Lacson.

Often we hear politicians who are opposed to the current administration speculate various measures the president might take to stay in power, fearing that once she steps down would enable tax payers to file corruption charges against her.

If most of this corruption charges would push through then it might spell doom to President Arroyo thus, according to the opposition, the president will do anything to stay in power.

Will “no election” result in favor of the president? I guess not for the constitution specifically states that the president will have to step down after the 6 year tenure.

Senator Lacson has a point in saying that the president might use her power to declare martial law across the whole nation and nullify the power of both congress and even the constitution. She will also have the power to rewrite the constitution in her favor just as what the then President Ferdinand Marcos did to rule the Philippines for 21 years.

Bukidnon Representative Teofisto “TG” Guingona III raised the same sentiment fearing the possibility that the administration of GMA will exploit the situation in Maguindanao. For him, unlike the Martial Law imposition of President Marcos, which was done swiftly, in one blow, all over the country, there is a possibility of a “creeping” Martial Law by GMA.

On the other hand, imposing Martial Law is the most logical step the president may have chosen to tell convince each and every filipino that she is her President and she’s determined to impose the rule of the law bring order to the fragile state of Maguindanao.

Therefore the president maximized her power and make stand before the imminent worse happen.

The complexity and the abnormality of the situation and the need for swift justice for 57 brutally massacred innocent civilians would dictate an extraordinary measure. Since martial law has been declared, let it be,

Cotabato Archbishop Quevedo may have better understood the facts much better since he leaves near Maguindanao. He said that critics seemed to have not fully understood the situation in Maguindanao.

“Media and politicians from faraway Manila do not seem to be familiar with these social, political, and cultural situation in Maguindanao. They seem to think that the police and the military can easily go into an area and just arrest the suspected culprits. Even a ‘state of emergency’ did not seem adequate to cope with the situation,”

How big the possibility might be, every Filipino should be on guard to whatever development is happening now at Maguindanao. I favor the temporary imposition of Martial Law at Maguindanao for the sole purpose of quelling the lawlessness in the area. I pray that the president’s purpose would show the power, determination, and commitment of the executive to impose the law.
